Completed: 186m2 renovation of the ground floor of a vacant pub and landscaping of 342m2 of gardens
Background:
The Royal Standard was a 19th century pub in the heart of Wallingford that closed its doors in October 2022. It remained closed for eight months before successfully reopening to the public in May 2023 following the renovation and rebrand as ‘The Royal’.
It is now a vibrant restaurant and bar with space for 60 covers inside and 80-100 covers outside. Phase two of the renovation is currently underway to convert the first floor into four ensuite hotel rooms.
The brief:
Firco was appointed to renovate and redesign the ground floor of the pub and undertake extensive landscaping work in the gardens. The client wanted to convert the old, disused pub into a sleek, modern and vibrant venue whilst respecting the history and character of the original building.
How the project was delivered:
Firco’s experienced team worked on all areas of the refurbishment including design, construction, interior design and garden landscaping.
The ground floor of the pub was old and dilapidated so required restoration and redesign work to transform it into a tasteful restaurant and bar that incorporated a modern design flair. At over 120 years old, it was important to the client to respect the history and character of the original building where possible. To ensure the redesign was sympathetic, Firco’s team of specialist builders and craftsmen carried out the project and undertook extensive planning consultations before work began.
As well as the full interior refurbishment, Firco carried out substantial outdoor landscaping of the 342m2 gardens. This included the replacement of the grass and paved areas with gravel and wooden platforms as well as the installation of new lighting and furniture.
Through the renovation, Firco was able to breathe new life into the building and bring it back into use in a sustainable way. It is now a vibrant and inviting restaurant, hotel and bar that is popular with local residents and visitors to the area.
