Completed: 186m2 renovation of the first floor of a vacant pub to create premium hotel accommodation
Background:
The Royal Standard was a 19th century pub in the heart of Wallingford that closed its doors in October 2022. It remained closed for eight months before successfully reopening to the public in May 2023 following the renovation and rebrand as ‘The Royal’.
It is now a vibrant hotel, restaurant and bar with four premium ensuite hotel rooms on the first floor and 60 covers inside and 80-100 covers outside.
The brief:
Following the successful renovation and redesign of the ground floor of the pub and extensive landscaping work in the gardens. The client wanted to convert the first floor into 4 premium ensuite hotel rooms. With a similar brief to the ground floor, the design and finish needed to be modern and vibrant whilst respecting the history and character of the original building. Each of the 4 rooms should have their own style and characteristics dictated by the building.
How the project was delivered:
Firco’s experienced team worked on all areas of the refurbishment including design, construction, interior design and finishings.
Like the ground floor the first floor was old and dilapidated so required restoration and redesign work to transform it into 4 tasteful, spacious ensuite hotel rooms. The 120 years history enabled the team to incorporate the buildings character into each room, delivering 4 individual schemes. To ensure the redesign was sympathetic, Firco’s team of specialist builders and craftsmen carried out the project and undertook the same extensive planning consultations before work began.
